Societas Insomnia is a troupe of veteran performers from the subcultures of ritual art, circus, sex, body modification, fire, butoh, and experimental music. We combine these marginalized forms to embody a world of living nightmare.

Our first year of shows; stretching from December 2004 to November 2005; developed a distinctive style of wordless and improvised movement-based theater drawing from the diverse backgrounds of our cast and the free sharing of methods and skills between us. Each of these four performances told one chapter in a mythic cycle of initiation, death, and rebirth that only the most attentive and loyal audience members had the chance to understand.

Therefore, we have chosen to open our residency at Someday Lounge with a comprehensive telling of that tale: The King Cycle, incorporating nearly the entire cast of all previous S.I. installments. Entirely new works will follow irregularly, continuing to explore the mythos of The Nightmare Company.

SOCIETAS INSOMNIA MEETING - After Burning Man, super-important

I'm trying to contact all of you by every means possible - holla back and let me know what's up.

We meet this next Saturday, September the 9th. Everyone should theoretically be back from Burning Man, so everyone should realistically be able to be there. Though I haven't been too much of a stickler about meetings this time around, I would really like to see everybody here so I know you're in for real. At this point, I've got confirmations from almost (but not quite) all of you; and plans are in place for all the resources we need.

This should be the greatest Societas Insomnia of all time, and also the most difficult. The good news is, the whole show is basically a recap of the shows we've already done. This means we can focus on getting our skills and our psychic connections back to snuff instead of generating a bunch of new material.

A Benefit for The Nightmare Collective

Indeed folks.

I'm performing tonight at a benefit for The Nightmare Collective. This is going to be a gigantic blow-out show, built around a touring group of electronic musicians and disaster relief workers known as SPAZ (Semi-Permanent Autonomous Zone). These are the expatriate Lords of the Oakland warehouse scene, the collective that birthed Nightmare Collective itself, as well as The SPAZ-Port, The Mutant Festival, Circo Mutante, and an absolute shit-ton of incredible music over the past decade. I don't know exactly what they've got in store for us, but past experience would indicate some combination of banging dance-floor experimental Live PA shit, some circus, and a light dose of more ethereal electro-acoustic material. Principally, what they have to offer is a party, but a party put on by hardline wandering art freaks. Also, they wander the Earth helping out at disaster sites such as New Orleans and Bali. Some of the greatest people alive.

Local acts will again include my own band, Nequaquam Vacuum, playing on the roof -- a post-asiatic free improvising ensemble combining my own scrap metal percussion and glossolalia vocals with the multi-instrumental meditations of Travis McAlister, psychedelic Indian classical noise from Brian Crowl on the sitar and jumbusch, the extended flute, recorder, and violin technique of self-taught maestro Dr. Yes, and some combination of our other revolving collaborators (maybe get James Davis out there, or Rale Sidebottom, you know, Nolon Ashley or something)

This sound series, derived by the sensations of spring, will continue an ongoing process, a transformation of its form and style throughout the seasons. As one can imagine, the crispness of the spring air has influenced a bright and mesmerizing atmosphere, hungry for growth and stimulation. Performance will offer the ideal space for both performer and observer to indulge in the metamorphosis as a freely evolving experience, enabling the listener to take part in what has been a natural process for Synchronicity Frequency's music.

"I often find the compositions I write resistant to stagnation, by my own dissatisfaction with redundancy I often 'sabotage' my recordings by manipulating and transforming their character and texture the more I play and perform them." -RO

Rather than keeping this process a matter of private studio session or undocumented live material, SF will release a newly transformed version of the original 'Motions Through Ambience' to be able to be experienced as an entire work dusted by the essence of the seasons. The first version of release V1.0 was released at the end of spring. Throughout summer, witness "Motions Through Ambience" live at various locations. There you will experience the current affects of the season on the set and observe the new form it will be taking. At the end of summer, acquire the latest recording and transformation, V1.1. Fall and winter will work in the same fashion until the full cycle has met its node.

Societas Insomnia dreamers meeting

I've been meaning to set up a solid meeting for the Dreamers (that is, butoh dancers) from Societas Insomnia to discuss choreography for the coming show on 9/16. This is especially pressing, because we're trying to expand our group to about double its current size for the next show, which means we've got quite a number of fine dancers onboard who don't know Thing One about what we're doing.

I know Llew and Lisa need to leave town soon, but I can never remember how soon exactly. Would this Saturday work for folks? Like, say, Saturday 3:00pm at Backspace?

Saturday, September 16, at the new Someday Lounge space in old town Portland; we will at last unveil the full two-act epic that has been told through the arc of our first four performances. Seen from a distance, our entire first year of collaboration appears as an extended process of generating material. WIth little forethought, a mythopoeic cycle of events has arisen naturally from the combination of talents gathered under the SI banner. I don't know yet where the screening will be - suggestions include Venom and XV, both of which sound like fine prospects for me.

Those of you who have pondered the deeper meaning of "EnterActive" are well-advised to attend. And to bring goggles, as there may be a bit of a mess.

The Red King is the neo-classical/black metal performance project of Johann Cleereman, also known for his participation in the highly mysterious nomadic clan Corpus Corax. The Red King combines a composer's musical precision with a deep ritual commitment to his alchemic stage process, which often leads to acts of self-mutilation and the consumption of dangerous chemicals during the course of performing his soul-bearing song cycles. My friend Scott drank a goblet of his blood once, and he couldn't stand or speak for about sixteen hours.
Nequaquam Vacuum is a free post-asiatic ensemble who usually build instruments out of scrap metal and found objects. I say "usually" because tonight they will instead be destroying scrap metal and found objects, but still musically. The Vacuum is elated to have founding member Tyler Armstrong back in the fold, having performed their last few shows with the Golden Age trio of Armstrong/McAlister/Mickens as well as members of the rotating cast who have played with the latter two since the literal disappearance of the former (it turned out he was in Turkey). Tonight's guests include Nolon Ashley, Rale Sidebottom, and multi-instrumentalist "Infamous Dangerous Psychopath".
Synchronicity Frequency is the industrial solo effort of Ryan Olsen, who this evening will be creatively DJ-ing the heaviest of metal.
CLICHE AU LAIT (PDX) is a performance Art group operated by JO CASE AND Micah Perry. Since its inception in 2000. One of their intentions is to allow viewers a transcendent experience with art not signified by static objects alone. CLICHE AU LAIT offers opportunities to intervene, predict, or participate. The resulting cooperative creation process affords participants entrance into the actual realm of the art, RATHER THAN OBSERVING SOMEONE ELSES EXPERIENCE OF ART.
Hail and Kiss the Goat present: War Pigs, excerpts from an unfinished musical.
Hail and Kiss the Goat is at the cross roads of Butoh, German industrial improv, Heavy Metal and political satire.
Short and sweet, this performance version of War Pigs is as poignant as the day Black Sabbath penned it.
Sati Fire are a ritual dance troupe headed by Tamara Yeskel and Zenia Brar, who have performed together since 2002 as part of the Pan-Zen Konspiracy Nettwyrk.
Alex Lily's TV Smasher is a large and dangerous machine designed to destroy television sets.
Jonas Nash's Blender of Death is an immense and even-more-dangerous machine built from lawnmower blades and a Volkswagen engine, dedicated to the destruction of works of art.

Got a few good ones. Not as many as I wanted. I thought my 'spot' was a good one until the whole front row of point and shooters decided to get in everyones way. It irritated me partly as a photog but more so for the poor audience members stuck behind a row of arms raised with little cameras growing out of them. Next time I will bring my squirt bottle...

This show was the best I have seen yet! Thank you for all your hard work and energy. I am always honored to be a part of this experience.

will i ever escape the dream that purported itself to be endless? need i me? what are you? why am i? so many miracles, so many wayward tragedies. i loved them all alike. agonizing ecstacy moments shared, on modified school busses from point to point, in shipyards, on under nearby above and below and before and behind endless stages. dreaming endlessly up the road. in backyards flanked with movie camera concrete walls and in basements laid thick with cigarette tar and cumulative residue of moments of love and hate and whatever else factors in. and i fell in love with my first exposed piano harp, plucked its piano heart with hands and devices and troubled relief. and i made friends with my first compoundly named daughter of a nomad bus driver. princess pocahontas dalmation dog with black spots sangua kitty mommy pocahontas beguerra tiger. i love you, wherever you are, beautiful! and lanced boiled by thick warm tattooed hands. and many journeys with a van called tiny elvis. and singing vibrating wind to the sleeping souls of the dead at mausoleums befitted for the decorum of fallen kings of past present and future time. did you get the message? we sure did. and thanks. and thanks again. and the hand of god spurts flames 3 stories high as the bart train passes by again. smile and wave. grind away the sparks upon the wicker king at the hand of the most elegant and eloquent geisha mistresses. and sultry pirate moments underground in an old goblins tavern of absynth, straight out of a dungeons and dragons campaign, complete with goblin jug band. and under geodesic domes under the desert sky as the dragon awakens and reminds me of me. oh the many times we all died again for all of you for the sake of all of us. is this the end of the endless dream? nine hundred and ninty nine. i still see you, edging tearlessly to the horizon. too bad this and too bad that. no hard feelings. your memory will always warm my heart. thank you so much for so much...

We have just recently (last night) gotten our hands on an essential piece of hardware for our coming show - a follow spotlight, which will allow us to illuminate the action on the floor of Sabala's and in front of the stage.

What we have not yet found is someone to operate this spotlight.

SO, I'm wondering whether anyone on this tribe has experience operating a follow spot, and might be interested in throwing down for the cause in exchange for free admission. Societas Insomnia Chapter 4 - This Sunday at Sabala's!

Indeed, faithful friends, the time is nearly upon us for the fourth chapter of Societas Insomnia. It's coming up this very Sunday, at Sabala's Mount Tabor. We're getting off to an earlier start this time - 9:00 doors, 9:30 for the opening band (Anansi, who are incredible), and 10:00 for the main event.

This chapter depicts a struggle for control of the Nightmare Company, as the slain-and-ressurected Dig returns to find his tribe in the molten iron fist of Drago and his fire fetishists. We've brought in a number of new conspirators for this show, most notably Domina Goddess Betka playing the part of the visiting Dutchess. Her unique style of torture will stand in scarlet contrast to the depredations of the flesh you've come to expect from our piercing and suspension crew.

You mustn't miss this, the closing of our first cycle and culmination of all threads of story and character that the most observant among you have hopefully begun to follow.

Curtain stitching PARTY! Tuesday the 18th.

Welcome everyone to come over and help be a creative hand in the imaculate "frankenstein" backdrop/curtain. This curtain is going to be very large and I will already have the entire body assembled. What I need help with is making the "stitches" along all of the seams of fabric. This is a no-brainer, no experience necessary and maybe I'll buy a case of beer for inspiration.
It will be held at my house which is 2128 se 51st. zip 97215. This is two blocks north of Division. We will begin around noon and go till it's done.
Also, this morning my phone committed suicide by jumping into a cup of water. Despite my minor attempts of mouth to mouth alas all my numbers are lost. Please let me know what yours are via email or voicemail at 503 380 1784.

Since the next SI show is on a Sunday howabout I dedicate my Saturday night radio show on Portland Radio Authority (PRA 96.7 FM / www.praradio.com) to the music of and inspired by SI with frequent mention of said event thrown in?

If interested, this means I would need any and all past and current musicians to burn and get to me your stuff before Saturday 30 October. Actually, make it the week before that as I'll probably want to play some of it for my October 29th Halloween show as well.

I'll plan on attending meetings as they're announced, so maybe you may catch me there to hand deliver yr stuff.

This doesn't mean I'll be there on the 6th, but hopefully...

Anyway, Yes, we are all very excited about the discovery of Paris, the savage suductress of the scalpel, but unfortunately she seems to have dropped off the face of the earth( or at least is not returning phone calls). Last time we spoke, however, she expressed to me that she would NOT ber ready for this next show, which, naturally, sent me into a depressive stupor that could only be cured by 3 pints of rum and a cat-o-9. Its a shame really, and Im sorry if anyones hopes were as high as mine. Say law vee.

As a general trend in Portland it is very discouraging and makes those of us who want to be involved forced to move to a more supportive community.

Last we encountered SI... the Dreamers have escaped and Dig was exorcised/killed/whatever...

I have had conversations about what's next, however, others probably haven't... So, nightmare scriptors... what happens next? How many dreamers are retrieved (I know some wont' be rejoining)? How? Dig?

We are trying to get together some representation for SI at our EL-fest Preview Party fundriaser Friday 30 Sept at Holocene.

Our only limitation (which cuts out one of our major strenths) is no fire.

We can have a pull (I will be doing a Sardonik Grin past-aziatik noize set that would be perfect), we can have characters raoming the event, and we could make room for a Nightgaunt Ensemble performance (especially if its roaming or otherwise on the floor).

I have us (SI) listed simply as 'Denizens of Societas Insomnia' to keep it open.

Also that night: Micah Perry (the names project) will be doing live art in the audience, Health & Frio will laptop/dj, the Roswell Sisters will do a short set, Soriah will perform, as mention Sardonik Grin, and the final perfromance of Spacefairy...

Also, visual art from Temple Tattoo, Optic Nerve Arts, Angry God Jewelry/Robot Piercing, Atlas, and Tigerlily Tattoo will be avaiable for direct sale...

Video showing of last two SI shows

hello lovers, spectacular performances from everyone involved! I have the camcording that Zombie Dan was so graciously projecting on the screen for everyone to see up close. This footage is raw and uncut and manually synced with the audio i took from the house board. I would like to see if everyone (anyone) would like to come over to our house on Tuesday early evening to watch the show. For those of us consumed in performance all evening, it's a great way to be able to experience what we did, mostly the way everyone else saw it.

We can view this on my projector in the back yard with a fire if you all like!

Others have expressed the fact that they haven't yet seen the first DVD of the second show. This only being about 30 minutes I thought would be a great way to start our viewing pleasure. Whoever has extra copies of the DVD should bring them so they can be dispersed amongst our crew.

I'd say make it a potluck, maybe some munchies, alcohell, whips, party favors and those pull string popping champagne bottles.

Anyone game, available?

Tuesday about 7-8 pm, aiming to start viewing at dusk.

SI Meeting Friday and Show Modules

Hey gang. It seems that somebody is already planning a meet-up on Friday to discuss the show. This is good. I would suggest Friday in the early evening, perhaps 5:00 at Backspace? Open to other places, but not sure I can make it there any earlier than that. Not reliably, anyway.

As for the performance itself, I've been working on lots of ideas and laying out individual modules that we can move around Friday to create the show. These are not in order, though in some cases I do make reference to how they might flow together and be scheduled.

Angela: Since Angela has expressed an interest in playing with us again, I'd love to get her back to do the opening dance/invocation/didjeridoo thing to kick off the evening.

Opening march-in
Dig is at the front with dreamers, then Daif on stilts leading Lana the marionette, then the rest of the company behind in appropriate nightmare procession.
Dig and dreamers take the stage, perform opening vocal/movement piece while Daif and piercers hang Lana up from a rack that he's bringing.

Freakshow
Daif and piercers leave the stage, with Lana still hanging. Slowly, the 999 Eyes Freakshow (HEA, Deidre, Jackie, Ken, Shiri?, Sam?, Spud?) take the stage to gawk at Lana - she is the freak and they are the audience. They surround her cage and torment her, laugh at her. Jackie does some tumbling and handwalking at the front of stage while this action unfolds behind her. The atmosphere is cruelly festive.
The rest of the freaks eventually get bored of her and exit, leaving only Pegleg, who is sitting sideways facing her, so the audience can see his face. He likes her, like a pet. He rises and approaches, slowly, as if to speak to her or touch her.
Enter Dig and Dreamers. At the site of Dig, Pegleg backs away from Lana. Dig considers the situation, then makes a decision. He motions offstage for the piercers to enter. They enter, and Dig and dreamers fade to the back of stage while the piercers unhook Lana and let her down. Piercers exit.
She crouches on the stage, drained and doll-like. Dig attaches a collar and chain around her neck, and hands the chain over to Pegleg. Pegleg is so happy to have this new pet, and he gently leads her offstage by her new collar.

Technical Fire:
This seems like a good place for the old technical fire scene, bing-bang-boom, whatever the crew comes up with.

Bug Eater:
Dig and dreamers, assisted by Freaks (HEA, Deidre, Sam?), drag in the coffin. Apple the bug eater is in there, covered with thousands of maggots (or perhaps crickets, which I think would be easier to see onstage). He's in a straitjacket, reverting to his childhood. Freaks drag him out of his coffin and lay him out at the front of stage, where he proceeds to freak out and lick all the maggots/crickets off his body.

Ivizia the Bug
I don't have that much of a plan for this one - Ivizia is getting pierced through her arms and back with giant steel skewers by Daif, transforming her into an insect. I believe she wishes to be hung upside-down for this part, and I think she might want to segueway into the fire fetish set. It's all up to her

Fire Fetish
Again, this can go however the fire crew wants it to go.

Double cantilever suspension:
I believe that Daif is reprising the double cantilever, with a third person hanging from the middle. Need to make sure to have three bodies for this one.

Soriah:
Soriah will perform the closing ritual, which will be about 20 minutes of throat singing along with the band, and the Dreamers/butoh, with the rest of the company filling the room as with the closing ritual last time. I'm very interested in finding ways to further theatricalize this. Of course, ends with the march-out by whole company.

Malice:
James has reportedly been talking with Malice about doing a cutting/torture scene; but I don't know that he's managed to get this together.

So, with those sections, we've got around 120 minutes of show, which is plenty.

Still very interested in getting Betka, Pandora, and others onstage if they are available. But if not, we've got a very strong show even without them.

Anyway, gotta run to the Contour. Please forward this to any parties who might be interested, yes?

I just spoke with Jason Sabala and have confirmed Saturday load in -- So here is the plan for Saturday [July 30, 2005] :

1:00 PM -- load in
3:30 PM -- full cast rehearsal and walkthrough
6:00 PM -- venue sound engineers arrive for sound check
8:00 PM -- second walkthrough with music
9:30 PM -- DOORS OPEN
10:15 PM -- Roadkill puppet show
11:00 PM -- SI show

Please arrive as close to 1:00 PM as possible so Lana will have time to do your makeup, and be sure to be at the venue by 3:30 PM so we can have everyone there for the full troupe rehearsal -- this will be our only real rehearsal and we badly need it.

UPDATES:
Betka can't do the stage performance this time around, but she's going to show up in full regalia and bring her entourage of hip pervs.
And James Davis has been looking for another performer to put together a bondage/mutilation performance on short notice. Not sure if that's going to manifest or not. James, I'd love to hear more about your progress; which should be no problem, since you're presently sleeping on the floor just a few feet away.
Soriah, on the other hand, is in. He'll be doing an opening invocation for us, the details of which have yet to be confirmed.
As is Daif, the PURE Suspension guy. Zuul remains uncertain whether or not he can make the gig, so we should try to hustle up another piercer or two to assist Daif with the backstage piercing operation.
As for bodies to hang: Lana is down. I hear that Joe Sparks is down. Still haven't heard from Mister Z, and haven't heard from Dale in a little while either. I believe we'll have him along for the ride, though. When I see Daif on Wednesday in Seattle, we'll work out exactly what he wants to bring down there and how many bodies he needs to do it.
There will indeed be a butoh troupe performing which consists of members of Insomnia and PAN together.
Certainly, Prometheus Bound will be up for a fire show.
And as I understand it, Jamie wishes to do a solo combining fire and piercing? Daif has asked whether or not she has the requisite gear for this performance, and he's way into piercing her if the answer is "yes".
Apple wants to do a piece using his bug eating skills, which sounds truly horrific and wonderful.
We've got the freakshow lined up - Jackie, Deidre, Ken, and HEA. I've been meaning to run them through a few butoh processes before then, so they can get the hang of things. Still not sure where to work them into the show, but they're too perfect to pass up.
What else is up? Has anybody heard from Pandora?

I'll be contacting David sometime tomorrow afternoon to firm up the order of acts for this show. So the time is now to finalize all plans and resources. Our show is this coming Saturday.

999 Eyes Ov Endless Busking tomorrow

Hey gang.

Thee 999 Eyes are in town, and we've just completed our first of three nights at Liberty hall.

For those of you who didn't make the scene - the tournout was a wee bit smaller than we might have hoped.

So tomorrow, we're embarking on an onslaught of busking and flyering, all over the city.

If you want to throw down with the big busk-fest, meet us Saturday morning (tomorrow) at 10 AM. We're going to split up into busking units, and then hit places like Saturday Market, The Free Geek Carnival, Hawthorne, 23rd, etc. Playing music and otherwise performing, handing out flyers, begging for money.

If you miss us at 10, come find us around town maybe.

Shows tomorrow at 7 and 9:30.

Plan for Friday

so, we have a couple Dreamers rolling into the Bay Area Friday morn....

we will be staying in the Mission and need to know:

1)What time should we be at the Shipyard?
2)Does anyone know the most efficient way to get from the Mission to the Shipyard?
3)Is anyone else in the Mission that can get us back there after the show, or is there an alternative for two bodies to crash for the night post-show?

Second Bus Plan

Hello cirkus!

Noah here, having just completed the wrangling of the first bus exit scene from Portland. We don't actually leave until tomorrow, of course, but the bus is here and the gear is mostly on the bus and I have confidence that all essential staff will be aboard when it takes off around 11 AM.

So, on to the business of the Second Bus. That bus, The Pandemonium Bus, is planning to leave Portland mid-afternoon Thursday the 23rd of June. So all you have to do is get yourself and your gear down to their house, and they'll get you to the Bay.

Your contact persons for this bus are named Buddha and Autumn. They can both be reached at the same phone number: 503-229-1822.

Their home is at the corner of N. Interstate and McClellan, though I am uncertain of the precise address.

Their e-mail is cirkuspandemonium@juno.com, but they don't check it very often.

The Pandemonium Bus is heading back to Portland on Monday the 27th; while the Happy Vag Bus stays in Northern California for smaller gigs and workshop time building the dome. You're free to go either way, of course, and there's room for you on whichever bus best suits your needs.

Final Saturday Plans

Good afternoon, my beloved cirkus family. Noah here, reporting from the Luscious Studios in Seattle.

I have at last formulated a plan for our big exit weekend, and I believe it's working with what everyone needs. Since time is short, and I'm going fuh-crazy trying to get all this together, I'll just go right into it:

SATURDAY, 6/18
circa 5:00: Chakra Lu, Apes, and myself arrive in the Happy Vag Bus, landing at my former home - corner of n mississippi and cook.

7:00 The Send-Off/Fundraiser/Video Premiere begins at that same house, N. Mississippi and Cook. The address is 3232 N. Michigan, but that's not a very helpful address. Here is a map:

The plan is to invite the general public to this party, and charge them $5 at the door. Of course, all cirkus cast and crew are in for free, and we can be very liberal about guests and whatnot. Keep in mind, though, that these $5 dribbles are going right into the tour fund, which will be helping to pay for our gas and food for the next three months.

Anybody who's willing and able to perform should bring their gear along - we'll be throwing down for whatever music and fire and anything else can be mustered out in my yard till around 10:00.

Bringing things to sell is a good idea, too. Not like a big yard sale; but things like selling wine by the glass, selling crafty things or CDs, homemade yummy snacks. If anyone can score us a pony keg or a few cases of beer, I'll reimburse you out of the cirkus money. That would be another good way to make cash.

Around 10, we'll head indoors and watch the video. Sean Strauss will have copies for sale to the cast for $5 apiece. I'm going to buy the master DVD from him, so we can make more copies once we get our hands on a DVD burner and some blanks.

And then we'll allow the party to sort of wind down naturally, not actually kicking anyone out till 1 AM or so.

And that's our Saturday.

SUNDAY 6/19

As it turns out, it's not making a lot of sense for the bus to leave Portland till Monday morning. The places that Dylan is arranging for us to stay and rehearse aren't ready for us till Monday night, so getting there Sunday night would be a little sketchy on all fronts. Also, the $500 advance check from Phoenix Fest has turned up missing; and we can't get it replaced till Sunday, and thus can't get it cashed till Monday. That $500 plus whatever we make at the fundraiser is our initial road nut.

What that means is, we have Sunday to get everyone together. My old house on Mississippi is the gathering place. I'll be awake by 9:00. Bring over everything you intend to take with you on the road, and we'll pack it in the bus. If some of you are unable to get your gear to the bus, we can hopefully arrange for the bus to come to you.

I'll do everything in my power to have my phone still turned on at that time. I have NO MONEY right now, thanks to about three different things going wrong for me all at once. So if my phone is turned off, try to get in touch with someone else from the troupe who can relay the message, or else e-mail me.

So that's Sunday.

MONDAY, 6/20
This is the day of our big exit, and we should try to get that going quite early if we can. Can everyone be ready to roll by 10? Crash at the Mississippi house the night before if you have to, or else meet us there by 10. If you realize that it's 10 and you haven't gotten to my house yet, call or e-mail right away. We won't leave withou you unless you've totally disappeared from the world.

It takes around 12 hours to drive to SF, so we should be rolling in there by 10 or 11.

As for our accomodations in the Bay: The idea of all of us living and rehearsing in a single space is looking pretty unlikely right now, due to many factors in the Oakland Warehouse Collective Scene that I won't go into here. By scattering us around amongst the various collectives and friends and safehouses, Dyland and I are confident that we can find enough crash space for everyone. Still, if you do have friends or loved ones who might want to put you up during our stay, now is the time to contact them.
We do have The 5lowershop to rehearse in, so that's still set.

Then we've got three days to get ready for our big gig at the How To Destroy the Universe Festival. I'm planning to do lots of rehearsing, busking on the street, passing out of handbills for the shows, and finalizing plans for some of the grey areas in the tour schedule.

We have a lot more to talk about once we're all in a room together. Some answers, I doubt we'll have for sure till we're in Oakland and able to talk with Dylan and Samantha as well. I promise that nobody will be kept in the dark, and nobody will be left out. This is your show. I'm working for you to manage and arrange the tour, but in the end it's the performers who will bring the necessary magic. Just tell me what you need, and I'll move mountains to get it. You have my word.

Oh boy oh boy. I can feel the momentum building from here in the nerve center. People are calling me every five minutes. Sam and Dylan are working on our Burning Man entry strategy, and things sound quite positive on that front. Gigs are crystalizing in Los Angeles and other points Southwest for the end of the run in September. Against all odds, I can see that this crazy glorious plan is going to come together. And I LOVE it when a plan comes together.

Cast party once and for all

I think I can say at this point that the whole Cast Party at Venom Studios concept is out the window. The 18th is unavailable, and though there had been talk of trying to throw together a last-minute deal for Wednesday or Thursday, I haven't heard back about that, and it's kind of too late at this point for me to put that together.

So here's what I propose:

Cast Party and fundraiser at David and Jonas' house, this Saturday the 18th. We congregate around 7-8, take turns throwing down little performances of music, fire, whatever. Charge a suggested donation of $5, pass the hat, etc. Sean says he will have the video ready for that night, and he's ready to sell as many copies to us as he can make. I'm also planning to buy the DVD master from him, so we can continue to make more copies as the opportunity presents itself.

Then we leave Sunday, early-ish, and head down to the Bay.

Who's digging this plan?

I guess what we need to make it solid is:

Confirmation that David's house is available.
And some performers to play at the party.

looks like i will not be able to play in a few weeks with you peeps after all.
my living situation has been hell and i just had to pay an ass load of cash today on my new warehouse paradise.

all the cheap flights i saw are for July, after the 4th....
i fogot it was vacation time for the normal folks.

i DO have a nice bunch of free miles i can cash in for :
either the mutant fest or burning man or both.

are these shows definate?
if so i will start looking at flights for those.

It's come to my attention that I may have been acting like a bit of an egomaniacal asshole of late. I sincerely apologize for that. I'm definitely feeling the pressure on this whole tour thing, and my social skills are being crowded out of my head by schedules and budgets and travel arrangements.

But in the end, on the rare chance that I have stepped back and taken a breath over the past month, it seems to me like we're just around the corner from the greatest Summer of all time. A life-changing experience for us and the people who join us.

Don't mind me. I'm going crazy, yes, but I promise that my madness will benefit you in the end. Or your money back.

Cast Party

Scheduled for the evening of June 18th, at which time the lovely Sean Strauss assures me he will have the entire two-camera shoot distilled down to a 45-minute video presentation suitable for selling and showing to Mom.

In fact, Mr. Strauss promises to have as many copies of this video available as we are able to pay for at $5 per copy.

So anybody who wants one (or more) should speak up in advance, so Sean can make sure to have enough copies to go around.

As for location, David's got the video projector and a rather large house. Seems like a natural choice to me.

Then the first bus leaves Portland the following morning for our group rehearsals in SF! HOORAY!!!

Benefit Show

Hey again.

I've got one of my crazy ideas brewing, so put on your fucking cosmonaut suits. Ready?

We need to do a fundraiser show, sometime in the next two weeks.

Leaves us precious little time, eh? But we do well under pressure.

Publicity/promo/getting people to show up is my bag. I'm good at that shit. I can deal with booking and organization of acts, too, get some rad bands and DJs and dancers and shit.

But I'm a little uncertain about the venue thing. I'd like to try for that space next to BackSpace, but I hear tell they've lost the key or something? Anyway, I'm going over there to talk with them today.

Anybody else got a line on a free venue that we can book on like a week's notice?

The Cirkus Tour

As you no doubt have heard, many of us in Societas Insomnia are embarking on a tour, and you're all invited.

Much of this tour will take place in the Bay Area, Oregon, and Washington; so you're able to participate without quitting your job or leaving your husband or anything.

There's a cirkus bus leaving for SF on the 18th of June; and you can get on that bus any time it passes through Portland, or you can drive/ride out and meet us along the way.

Of course, it's not as much of a goodbye for you, who are invited to RUN AWAY WITH ME TO THE TRAVELLING CIRKUS, RUN, THEY ARE ALMOST UPON US, RUN RUN RUN!!!!!

Ahem... but nonetheless, this goodbye party will mark the end of my... jesus god, has it really been Nine Years in the same city? So old.

...my nine year tenure in Portland, and a celebration of my modest achievements in the local art scene.

And it will all happen at The Hive, a similarly-modest goth-industrial dance night held Sundays at Lola's Room. This club has been the location for many of the more pivotal scenes in this magnificent epic drama (tentatively titled "Noah Moves to Portland, OR Il Purgatorio"); and i can't think of a more fitting place to draw the curtain.

Tomorrow night, The Hive, Lola's Room, 10-LATE.

The Greatest Show On Earth

I sit here today at my moronic day job (marketing executive, eMerchandise.com, welcome to the fucking magic store).

And as I sit here, my thighs aching from impossible slow-motion movements up and down stairs and ladders and scaffolds and stages, little bits of scalp flaking off my freshly-shaven head from when Ty set it on fire last night at Dante's; it occurs to me that we are the living struggle against corporate homogeny and the commodification of art.

It occurs to me that a single monolithic design is being imposed upon the world we love by a cadre of evil billionaires; and that Their plan for Us is to steal our style, leaving the substance behind, and repackage it for sale at the mall to all the same awful people who always crowd us out of our spaces as soon as they hear "hot goth chicks" are hanging out there.

The Baseball Caps. The Mid-Riff Girls. The Pigs.

And as my reverie continues, exclusive of doing any of the work that these deluded imbeciles somehow believe I would still be doing here at my desk despite all evidence to the contrary; it seems to me that we are winning this struggle between Their 10%, and Our 5%, over the minds and souls of the 85 that don't got a clue.

It seems to me that the 200 people who chose to spend a few hours with us on Saturday left that room stronger, more awake, and more open to new ways of thinking and being. I hope and believe that, when they got home and popped on the TV, the things it had to offer them seemed hollow and tawdry and boring. I hope that they awoke the next morning not caring so much about the new Star Wars or getting the big promotion at work. I hope that their minds are filled now with dreams of their own potential, dreams that they abandoned in the name of "growing up" and assimilating, worlds they might have made if they had not made this dire decision.

And as I sat stunned on the floor of Dante's last night, near tears from Peach's performance with Song to the Siren; I knew then that Our People are evangelists, carrying the message of Self-Determination to these poor befuddled 85% that have given up their souls to the Billionaires via television, materialism, mass consumption, and apathy to the real world. I knew that we need to stop running from the Baseball Caps. Sing to them. Dance for them. Spit in their faces. Smash your cocktail glass against their smug greasy mouths.

Teach them the lesson that only we can teach:

That each of us is what and who we wish to be.

That the spaces between us are an illusion.

That true individualism and true collectivism go hand in hand.

And that happiness does not lie in a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow that you must search for.

It lies instead within each of us, and the path is as clear as our desires and our dreams.

So this is the path that I have chosen, and that all of you my family and friends and lovers and muses walk as well. How strange and inspiring that our solitary roads have led us all to this Great Path. How fitting that our lifelong, hard-won dedication to being ourselves against all the gravity of conformism that has tried to tug us down; has led us now into an ever-expanding tribe that may yet turn the tide against our enemies in the money seat. The 10%. Far may they fall, hard may they fall, soon may they fall. Selah.

I love you all. I love you. And I want you to stay with me.

So July, if not sooner, is when we shall convene again.

And in the meantime, you ought to start thinking about getting on the big bus and dropping out for three months.

Money

Hey gang.

At this point, we have paid off all the producers (I got $200, leaving me $300 in the red; Dave and Dale each got $100), out-of-towners (Daif and Lana each got $50), and people-with-extra-expenses like Fredrick the set guy ($50).

This leaves all of the other performers still to be paid, though alas each of you has a mere $20 set aside. It's the price of having this gigantic show, I suppose. We'll keep making it bigger and bigger, though. The next show at Sabala's, we'll have a better door cut, and a bigger room, and better publicity. Therefore, more money.

David has money for the fire crew, and Pandora.

Dale has money for Dana, Jamo, Zack, and John.

I have money for the band, and I already paid Paul the Stage Manager and gave Kathy $10 to reimburse her for the flowers.

I can't seem to recall whether or not any of us called Yoshi; but if not, then I've got money for his sweet little ass as well.

I'll be at Backspace tonight around 10, meeting with Charisse and David about the tour. So if you want to pick of your twump note, and/or find out more about Thee 999 Eyes; then I guess you ought to come down and meet us.
